Few Other Quick Hits
Sure, the LA Times piece was the most interesting, but here are a couple of other pieces...
The big story for Altadena is the LA Times piece this morning about the Edison Settlement Offer. I have already gotten responses to the earlier post…and I will let you deduce the nature of the input.
The offer is going to appeal to some, offend others, and make some shrug their shoulders. The issue is so emotional on so many levels. It is not “universal,” and it is a “starting point.” The tactic is one used often. They will let the number “wormhole” in your brain. As time goes on, as things get more difficult, the question of “is it worth it” starts to present. Does that offer start to make sense to certain people? Again, there are those who will hold out and those who will say, “you know what, is it worth it?” Is the offer the right one? That is for everyone to choose themselves. I was just trying to contextualize it. I said it was “opening,” and might appeal to some. 43,000 people have a lot of different experiences. Many are experiencing trauma on top of trauma. How they will respond will be 43,000 individual responses. It is the opening act of a long play.
In other news, Politico had a good piece about the 7 Assumptions about Prop 50 this morning. The points are interesting and they illuminate underlying themes we have talked about in since the beginning of the Campaign when they started attacking Charlie Munger, Jr in August.
The first assumption is can Trump motivate the voters enough. It will be enough to get people in the base motivated, but the true “turn out” power of the anti-Trump vote will be tested beyond the base. They will definitely try. Expect to see a lot of Trump the next 8 weeks in all forms of advertising. Expect to hear his name.
It is up to the No campaign to make it about more than Trump.
The next argument is about whether voters are able to see things through the “two wrongs do not make a right” framework. Ok, pretty basic. Can the Yes side undermine our basic learning back in Kindergarten, albeit for a short period of time. Will the former Governor, be a shifting force or not, then they talk about “candidates” and whether those “candidates” can be truly defeated, a theme we have discussed. Are the 5 seats really safe or gone? Candidates matter folks.
There are also the conversations about Latino voters and how the events nationally may affect them locally. Nobody knows, as Gustavo Arellano and Mike Madrid discussed. Again, it is about who can get the right message out and be “authentic.”
In other words, Politico, we get everything you are saying. These are the variables we are writing about here. Candidates, surrogates, whether human decency will override the emotional response to Trump, where the wildcard of Latino voters goes. Sounds familiar.
As we go down the headlines in the California Playbook, the DNC came in to the Gerrymandering Discussion, but not as we asked. They are “organizing.” We would love to see them put their money where their mouth is and pay the $283 million the ballot measure will be worth since it is Democrats that want to “save democracy.” We could use the money and would prove their wholehearted support for us California citizens giving up our rights. One wonders why their support is tepid? Do they know something we do not?
Ok, that about top lines our day. Will see if something turns up later.
